Tax Day Update: IRS Extends Tax Deadline to April 18

Tax Law and News IRS and tax professionals

The Internal Revenue Service announced today that it is providing taxpayers an additional day to file and pay their federal taxes following system issues that surfaced early on the April 17 tax deadline. Tax preparers will now have until midnight on Wednesday, April 18 to file their clients’ taxes. Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time.

Intuit ProConnect’s suite of products will be available and accepting e-files in line with the extended deadline on April 18.  Tax preparers should continue to file their taxes like they normally do this Tuesday evening. For those who prepared and filed taxes with Intuit ProConnect earlier today during the IRS system issues, we are now submitting those returns to the IRS, and the IRS is processing newly filed returns as normal.

    1. Traditionally, states have followed the IRS in these circumstances, and we expect a similar scenario this year. However, not all states have issued formal guidance given the announcement from the IRS came out late yesterday. We expect each state to publicly announce their position soon.
